Car Insurance for Seniors: What You Need to Know

Senior citizens up to their early sixties are the safest drivers in the United States, according to the American Automobile Association. After that age, driving can present a challenge. While most senior drivers are careful and respond well to situations that could cause an accident, slower reflexes and a loss of perception combine to make accidents more common.
Car insurance needs change to reflect changing circumstances. It’s not always easy to keep up with those changes but if you don’t, you may be costing yourself money as well as not having the best coverage. A good insurance agent will remind you to review your insurance coverage occasionally, but even then, some things may be neglected or ignored. While it’s up to the agent to make sure your insurance complies with state laws and coverage, it’s up to you, the driver, to be sure your insurance is in line with your personal skills and needs.

What You Need to Think About

You will be driving less often and probably fewer miles after you retire. Driving less can dull your driving skills, but fewer miles behind the steering wheel means you take risks associated with driving less often and may make you eligible for a low mileage discount. If your insurance agent doesn’t bring it up, ask about it. Make price comparisons at least every other year. If you find your insurance is costing more than it should, don’t stay with your company from a sense of loyalty. Even if you’ve had insurance with them for years, companies are quick to raise rates if a customer isn’t profitable to them, so you can take the same attitude. When you compare prices, ask about available discounts. Make a list of possible discounts before you talk to the agent. Many discounts that apply to younger drivers will also apply to you.

Discounts That Will Help Keep Insurance Costs Low

  • If your household has multiple vehicles, insure them all at one company and get a discount.
  • If you insure your home or its contents with the same company, you may get a multiple policy discount.
  • Install safety devices like automatic seat belts and anti theft systems. Anything that makes your car safer in any way will help cut your total insurance cost.
  • Senior citizens are generally safe drivers, so if you haven’t had an accident or a ticket in years, make sure your insurance agent knows.
  • If you’ve taken a defensive driving course recently, tell your insurance agent.

Traxxas VXL Details

The Traxxas Stampede VXL is a fantastic mid range motor that more than delivers in the speed stakes over its predecessor, the Traxxas Stampede XL5. The new brushless power system fitting most of the other components in the chassis have also been upgraded accordingly, so you should be able to get the maximum power out of the Velineon 3500 motor without having to worry about the strain being put on the other parts.

The VXL version has more than just a new brushless motor. The VXL-3s electronic speed controller offers better operation than the XL5, yet it still has a training mode that limits the power output to 50% so you can still take this for a test drive without having to worry so much about violent crashes.

Of course, the main reason as to why you would go for the brushless VXL model is all about speed, and the ESC is able to propel the new Stampede to speeds of over 65 mph when pushed flat out. You won’t be driving around at this speed all of the time but it is a good indication of what this little beast is capable of.

Traxxas have learnt from some of the issues with the older versions of the ‘Pede by introducing a wheelie bar. No longer will you have to worry about flipping your truck over onto the roof and potentially breaking a shock tower – the fully adjustable wheelie bar stops the front end from lifting too much.

Even the smallest of parts have had a great deal of thought put into them, with the screws having hex heads instead of Phillips. This will greatly reduce the wear and tear on the screws from removing them for upgrades and so on.

The Traxxas Stampede VXL is a great monster truck, with all of the benefits of the old model plus a lot more! Check it out today.

Change Oil With an Oil Extractor

Inside the engine of your car a continuous controlled explosion creates power and heat. Lots of heat. Temperatures soar and components move thousands of time per second. The conditions are tough even for metal parts and that’s why engine oil is needed to smooth the way and make this inhospitable environment work. Yes, without oil an engine is no use at all and could not even last for the shortest journey without seizing up with hot parts expanding to become too large for the space available and with no oil cooling they can even become welded together.

It’s no wonder that the cooling, cushions and cleaning oil needs to be replaced. Once the additives that control the viscosity of the oil and help to clean the engine are gone 9through natural attrition) there’s little choice but to drain the old oil and revitalise the engine with a new supply that will last for thousands more miles.

So changing oil is essential, how do we do it? Well, you could pay someone or have it done as part of your car service. If you don’t like the sound of this you could always do it yourself. This is often the best way to get a cheap oil change and if you do it yourself regularly you’ll soon recoup the cost of any equipment you might need.

If you don’t fancy lying underneath a ton of metal to change the oil you can use an oil extractor. They can be purchased from Amazon for 40 to 50 dollars and create a vacuum to suck the oil out. They are manually driven so don’t need a power and siphon the oil into a container ready for correct disposal. They provide an easy and cheap way to change oil but can by somewhat fiddly to use, often requiring several attempts to remove all of the oil.
