Why I Love / Hate Family Dome Tents

Ah yes the annual family camping trip is right around the corner. You are very excited as you plan this year’s camping trip. Last year the family had so much fun in the mountains that you are looking forward to doing again. As you are getting all the supplies together, you pull out your family dome tents.  You think about all the memories that were made in these tents and everything you loved about them, but there were also some downsides.

Now dome tents are great, don’t get me wrong. I cannot think of many things that aggravate me about them. But one of my biggest pet peeves with these dome tents is the lack of head room for the taller people.  I can’t stand up fully in dome tents, so I have to walk around hunched over all the time. When it came to family game time at night. I was unable to sit by a wall. I had to sit closer to the center of the tent due to head room which made our monopoly game a little weird by putting the kids farther away from the board. Also taking down and setting up dome tents can be a pain compared to the triangle tent counterparts. There are so many poles. I have checked out some of the newer family dome tents though and they seem to be able to be set up in three easy steps.

Some of the things I did love about our dome tent is that it folds up so small it makes storing the tent very easy. They are normally very affordable, and they seem to be getting easier to set up every single year. With the advances in technology it makes me want to go out and buy a new tent since one of the biggest issues I have with my current one is it is hard to set up and take down. Another great thing about these tents is their small storage bags which makes it so you can put them almost anywhere. I never thought of myself as a collector or hoarder until my daughter informed me that she had inherited the trait from me. I had innocently commented on the drawer full of used Canadian postage stamps that she had in her room. I would not have thought of her as a stamp collector as she did not have a stamp album and was not interested in stamps from other regions. It was just a hobby she said. My newspaper and magazine collection is too big and has to be pruned on an annual basis to allow us to re-utilize one more room. I collect stamps and am a proper philatelist with hundreds of stamps from around the world in my albums. My favorites are the stamps of Australia because they seem to be more vibrant and colorful than the stamps from other countries. The stamps feature many rare and beautiful paintings which I particularly like. Postage stamp collecting is a great hobby to start when you are young and parents should encourage their kids to take up a hobby of some kind in their childhood.
