Advantages of an Outdoor Umbrella Shade
Shading a front or backyard often involves digging out the power tools and drilling holes into your home. This is especially common when installing roll up style shading products. The downside to those shades is that you need some type of physical mounting spot to put them. Forget about using them out in the open. Another type of shade product called a patio umbrella can be used just about anywhere and provides much needed protection from the sun. Umbrellas have a sturdy metal frame which supports a fabric cover overhead. These covers vary in shape, style and size.
Circular umbrellas are measured in diameter, or the length from one side to the direct opposite. Square or rectangular ones are measured by their sides. Umbrellas with flat edges work well against walls and fences because they can scoot right up to them. Circular ones work well when placed into dining table mounts.
The fabric used in patio umbrellas can range from polyester to Olefin, but does the same basic thing: cool the area below and provide protection from the sun. Lighter colored fabric is less effective at blocking UV rays than darker ones. The fabric is held taught by the metal or wooden veins underneath. These veins have hinges at the center which allow them to fold down into a compact shape.

Regular patio umbrellas are typically placed into an outdoor table, but can also be placed in a freestanding mount for greater versatility. If the central pole will interfere with your design setup, I recommend a cantilever umbrella instead. These umbrellas have an offset base which stays out of the way. The offset patio umbrella frame holds the canopy right over your head, protecting a large area below. Pieces of furniture can be set up freely without worry of obstruction. Some even have umbrella bases with wheels which allow them to be rolled around.
